About Garissa Airport
Garissa Airport is a regional domestic airport serving Garissa, the capital of Garissa County, and the wider north-eastern region of Kenya. It acts as the main air gateway for business, government, humanitarian and community travel in an area that lies close to the Somali border.
The airport reopened for full operations in July 2026 after a year-long modernization project jointly funded by the national and county governments. The upgrade extended the runway from 1,200 to 1,280 metres, added two taxiways, enlarged the apron, and delivered a new terminal with check-in areas, waiting bays, VIP halls and a prayer area.
Located about 2.5 km from Garissa town centre, the airport is reached in a short drive by taxi or pre-arranged private transfer. Scheduled services connect Garissa with Nairobi's Wilson Airport, typically using Dash 8 turboprop aircraft.
The compact single-terminal layout keeps passenger processing straightforward, while ongoing improvements are expanding facilities and capacity. As the airport develops, it continues to strengthen air links between north-eastern Kenya and the rest of the country.
