About Fort Sumner Municipal Airport
Fort Sumner Municipal Airport is a village-owned, public-use general aviation airport serving Fort Sumner and eastern New Mexico. Located about 2 miles northeast of the town center, it mainly handles private, business and charter flying rather than scheduled airline service.
The airfield opened in 1941 and was rebuilt by the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 as Fort Sumner Army Airfield, a World War II training base. After the war it became the municipal airport and has since supported local aviation, and the surrounding area has also been used for high-altitude balloon launch operations.
The airport has two asphalt runways, 03/21 and 08/26, along with a general aviation ramp and aircraft parking. There is no control tower or commercial passenger terminal, so operations follow general aviation procedures.
Road access links the airport to Fort Sumner and regional routes toward Santa Rosa, Clovis and Roswell. Because on-site services are limited and fuel is not available, pilots and visitors should plan their travel and vehicle arrangements in advance.
