About Fort Meade Executive Airport
Fort Meade Executive Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving the Baltimore–Washington corridor and the Fort Meade area in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It supports business and private aviation, defense contractors, flight schools, and other regional users, and functions as a designated reliever for Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
The airfield began as a U.S. Army airfield and was designated for privatization under the 1988 Base Realignment and Closure Act. It closed in 1995 and reopened on November 1, 1999, as Tipton Airport, named for career military pilot William D. "Shorty" Tipton. In 2025 the facility rebranded as Fort Meade Executive Airport and is operated by the state-chartered Tipton Airport Authority.
The 366-acre airport sits about one mile southwest of Fort Meade, near Odenton, and is bordered by Fort Meade and the Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge. It is roughly 18 miles from downtown Baltimore and within reasonable driving distance of Washington, D.C., Annapolis, and Columbia, with road access via the Baltimore-Washington Parkway corridor.
With a single runway (10/28), 24-hour self-service fueling, aircraft tiedowns, T-hangars, and minor maintenance services, the airport offers practical support for general aviation travelers. Current plans include a new terminal building and a 1,200-foot runway extension, continuing its role as a convenient gateway for general aviation in central Maryland.
