About Felker Army Airfield

Felker Army Airfield is a U.S. Army airfield located at Fort Eustis on the western side of the installation in Newport News, Virginia. Part of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, it supports military aviation, flight training and research, development, test and evaluation missions for the U.S. Army and partner services across the Hampton Roads region.

The airfield was dedicated on December 7, 1954, in memory of U.S. Army Warrant Officer Alfred C. Felker, and originally opened as the first military heliport in the United States. Its early design featured two runways bisecting a circular taxiway with eight landing pads, and over the decades the facility was upgraded with a paved runway, a modern air traffic control tower and an on-site fire department.

Today the airfield operates a paved asphalt runway (14/32) of roughly 3,000 feet and provides helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft facilities for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Army, with the Navy accounting for the majority of airfield movements. It remains an active training and aviation support site rather than a public passenger terminal.

Felker Army Airfield is situated about seven miles from downtown Newport News and within easy reach of Williamsburg and Yorktown. Access is through the controlled Fort Eustis installation, and onward travel is typically made by private vehicle, taxi or arranged ground transportation to points across Hampton Roads.
