About Farewell Airport
Farewell Airport is a small, remote airstrip serving the Farewell area in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of interior Alaska. It lies in a largely roadless region along the upper Kuskokwim drainage, near the Alaska Range, and functions mainly as an access point for backcountry and wilderness travel.
The site was established as an FAA station with an airfield in 1942 for World War II defense support, and the airport was later activated in 1947. Today it is publicly owned by the FAA but operates as a private-use airstrip requiring prior permission to land, serving emergency use, hunters, guides and charter traffic rather than scheduled passenger service.
The airport has a single gravel and dirt runway, about 4,600 feet long, with no control tower, lighting, fuel or terminal building. Because there is no road link, access is by small aircraft, and nearby communities such as Nikolai and McGrath serve as regional aviation hubs.
Farewell Airport is roughly 255 km (158 mi) northwest of Anchorage by air. Travelers should arrange charter flights and ground logistics in advance, as facilities and services at the airstrip are minimal.
