About False Island Seaplane Base

False Island Seaplane Base is a small, publicly owned water-based landing area serving False Island in Southeast Alaska's Sitka City and Borough. Activated in 1967 and owned by the U.S. Forest Service, it provides floatplane access to a remote part of the Inside Passage rather than conventional scheduled airline service.

The base has no passenger terminal or road connection. It consists of a single water runway about 4,000 feet long and basic shore access, and it is used mainly by private aircraft and charters serving fishing, wilderness and lodge traffic.

Located roughly 34 miles (55 km) from Sitka by water, the base is reached by floatplane or boat, and onward travel to Sitka and surrounding coastal communities is normally by chartered floatplane, private boat or water taxi.

Because the site is unattended and offers no fuel, shops or passenger facilities, visitors should arrange transport, supplies and weather planning in advance.
