The base supports air refueling, airlift, and aeromedical evacuation operations, and its airfield handles military aircraft traffic rather than scheduled commercial passenger service.
The installation opened in 1942 as the Spokane Army Air Depot and was later renamed Fairchild Air Force Base in 1950. Located on the West Plains southwest of downtown Spokane, the base lies roughly 12 miles from the city center and is also near Spokane International Airport, which serves commercial airline flights for the region.
Fairchild operates a single AMC passenger terminal for authorized and space-available military travel, with parking and basic passenger amenities available on site. Road access connects the base to Spokane, Airway Heights, Medical Lake, Cheney, and nearby eastern Washington and northern Idaho communities, and ground transportation can be arranged for onward travel.
