About El Maitén Airport
El Maitén Airport is a small public-use aerodrome serving the town of El Maitén in northwest Chubut Province, in Argentine Patagonia. It is located about 2.5 km north of the town centre, close to Route 243, and is operated by the Aero Club El Maitén.
The aerodrome has its origins in the early 1960s, when local residents and provincial and municipal bodies built the first grass runways. The aero club was officially founded in 1961, and from 1969 the airport received commercial flights operated by Líneas Aéreas del Estado, connecting the town with the regional air network.
Today the airport mainly serves general aviation, charter operations and medical evacuation flights. It functions as a local air gateway to the Comarca Andina, a region known for the La Trochita heritage railway and for outdoor travel between El Bolsón, about 55 km to the west, and Esquel, about 135 km to the south.
Because there is no regular scheduled commercial service, most visitors reach El Maitén by road or through nearby airports, then continue into the town centre in a short drive. The compact airport keeps arrivals, parking and the main road links easy to use for private and group transfers.
