About Eielson Air Force Base

Eielson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Interior Alaska that primarily supports military aviation rather than scheduled commercial flights. It is home to the 354th Fighter Wing and hosts training activities including RED FLAG-Alaska, along with units from the Alaska Air National Guard.

The base traces its origins to 1943, when it was established as the Mile 26 Satellite Field to support Ladd Field. Construction was completed in October 1944, and the installation was later redesignated in honor of Alaskan aviation pioneer Carl Ben Eielson.

Located about 23 miles southeast of Fairbanks and roughly 10 miles from North Pole, the base is reached by road along the Richardson Highway. Its passenger terminal operates from the Joint Mobility Complex and serves eligible Space-A and Space-R travelers, while commercial airline service for the region is handled by Fairbanks International Airport.

For eligible passengers, Eielson offers a compact passenger terminal with controlled screening, baggage procedures and long-term parking, plus base lodging and support services. The installation functions as a key military gateway to the Fairbanks area and Interior Alaska.
