Opened in 1929 as the Barre-Montpelier Airport and renamed in 1970 in honor of Commissioner of Aeronautics Edward F. Knapp, the airport has two asphalt runways and a compact terminal and administration building. Scheduled airline service ended in 1989, and today the airport primarily supports general aviation, air taxi and UPS air freight operations.
The airport sits about 3 miles west of downtown Barre and roughly 5 miles from Montpelier, the state capital, making it a convenient entry point for travelers heading to central Vermont communities, ski areas and the Mad River Valley.
