The airport was built as part of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, under which the Department of Transport and the Government of Quebec agreed in 1983 to construct 11 airports in northern Quebec. Transport Canada continues to operate the airport, while day-to-day maintenance is carried out by the Cree Nation of Eastmain.
Located about 2 km southwest of Eastmain, the airport has a single small terminal building and one gravel runway (02/20). Air Creebec operates scheduled flights, and the airport is designated as a remote airport under the National Airports Policy.
Ground transportation options are limited: there are no taxi services or car rental agencies at the airport, though free parking is available for travelers. Passengers should plan private or pre-arranged transport for the short journey into Eastmain.
