About Eareckson Air Station

Eareckson Air Station is a remote U.S. Air Force airfield on Shemya Island, at the far western end of Alaska's Aleutian Islands. It supports military operations and serves as an emergency diversion point for civilian aircraft flying transpacific routes.

The site was developed in 1943 during the Aleutian campaign of World War II and was renamed in 1993 to honor Colonel William O. Eareckson. The station has a single 10,000-foot runway that can accommodate large military and commercial aircraft, and it is home to the 611th Air Support Squadron and the Cobra Dane radar.

Located about 1,500 miles southwest of Anchorage, the airfield has no road connection to the mainland and no scheduled commercial passenger service. Access is restricted, with prior permission required, and is generally arranged through Anchorage for military personnel, contractors and authorized visitors.

Because of its remote setting and limited facilities, travelers should plan journeys around connections in Anchorage. The station's value lies mainly in its strategic location and its role as a safety and staging point on North Pacific air routes.
