Dyess Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located southwest of Abilene, Texas. Established in 1942 and renamed in 1956, it has long been one of West Texas's most important military airfields, supporting both strategic bomber and tactical airlift missions.
The base is home to the 7th Bomb Wing, which operates B-1B Lancer bombers, and the 317th Airlift Wing, which flies C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft. Its main runway is approximately 13,500 feet long, allowing it to support large military aircraft and a wide range of airfield operations.
Located about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of downtown Abilene, the installation is reached by road and lies close to Interstate 20. Commercial passenger flights for the Abilene area are handled at Abilene Regional Airport, while Dyess remains an active military airfield.
