About Drift River Airport

Drift River Airport (DRF) is a private-use airstrip on the western shore of Cook Inlet in the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Activated in June 1966, it supports the Drift River Terminal Facility, an oil storage and loading site operated by Cook Inlet Pipe Line Company, rather than serving scheduled commercial passenger traffic.

The airfield lies about 26 miles west of Kenai, across Cook Inlet, and is identified by the FAA as 3AK5. It has a single gravel runway, 5/23, measuring 4,100 by 150 feet with medium-intensity edge lighting, plus a small gravel helipad. The airport is unattended and has no control tower.

Access is restricted to authorized facility operations, and landing requires prior permission from the operator. There is no public road link to Kenai or Anchorage from the airfield, so movement is coordinated by air or through company vehicles within the secure terminal site.

The airport has no public terminal, check-in, security, shops, restaurants, or passenger lounges. It functions as an industrial support airfield for oil terminal activities rather than a public travel gateway.
