About Des Moines International Airport
Des Moines International Airport is the main airport serving Iowa's capital city and the wider central Iowa region. Established in 1933 and operated by the Des Moines Airport Authority, it functions as a joint civil-military airport for commercial, general aviation and military operations.
Located about 5 km (3 miles) southwest of downtown Des Moines, the airport handles domestic passenger services through a single terminal building with two concourses, Concourse A and Concourse C. Major US carriers operate nonstop flights to hub airports and destinations across the country.
The airport is quickly reached by car via Fleur Drive and nearby highway connections, with taxis, rideshare services, rental cars, hotel shuttles and DART public buses available for onward travel to the city centre and surrounding areas.
A new terminal development programme is expanding gates and passenger facilities, with the first phase of the modern terminal complex expected to open in 2027 as the airport continues to support growth across central Iowa.
