About Davis-Monthan Air Force Base

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located within the city limits of Tucson, Arizona. It serves as a major hub for Air Combat Command operations and is home to the 355th Wing, Twelfth Air Force (Air Forces Southern), the 563rd Rescue Group and the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, commonly known as the Boneyard.

The site's aviation history began when the City of Tucson acquired land southeast of downtown for a municipal airfield, dedicated in 1925 as Davis-Monthan Landing Field. It later operated as Tucson Municipal Airport before the Army Air Corps took control in 1940, and it was named for Lieutenants Samuel H. Davis and Oscar Monthan, two Tucson aviators who died in military service.

Located roughly 10 km (6 miles) southeast of downtown Tucson, the base is reached by road and offers access to the University of Arizona, Saguaro National Park and the broader Sonoran Desert region. Tucson International Airport handles scheduled commercial airline service for the area.

Because Davis-Monthan is an active military installation, public access is restricted and air travel is primarily reserved for military personnel and eligible space-available passengers. On-base services support authorized personnel, while ground transportation connects the base to hotels, neighborhoods and destinations across Tucson.
