Columbus Municipal Airport is a public general aviation airport located about three miles north of Columbus, Indiana. It serves as the city's gateway for corporate, charter, and private aviation, supporting a region anchored by Cummins Inc. and a cluster of manufacturing and engineering firms.
The airport's airfields opened in 1943 as Atterbury Air Force Base and were activated as a public airport in February 1944. During World War II the base served as a training field for medium bombers and gliders before evolving into the municipal airport that operates today.
The airport has two runways, 5/23 and 14/32, a control tower, and a terminal building that houses the fixed-base operator, pilot services, and a restaurant. It handles business aviation traffic without the congestion of the larger commercial airports in Indianapolis.
