About Columbus Air Force Base
Columbus Air Force Base is a military airfield serving Columbus, Mississippi, and the wider Golden Triangle region of northeastern Mississippi. Established in 1941 as an Army Air Corps pilot training base, it was closed after World War II and reopened in the early 1950s during the Korean War, later returning to its pilot training role in 1969.
Today the base is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing and is one of the U.S. Air Force's principal undergraduate pilot training installations. Instead of commercial passenger flights, its operations center on military flight training and related air activity.
Located about seven miles north of downtown Columbus, the installation is reached mainly by private car, taxi, ride-share, or pre-arranged transfer. The nearby Golden Triangle Regional Airport provides commercial air service for the region.
Because access is restricted to authorized personnel and visitors, civilian travelers should plan ground transportation and arrival arrangements in advance. The base remains a major employer and an important part of the Columbus-area community.
