About Coleman A. Young International Airport
Coleman A. Young International Airport is the general aviation airport serving Detroit and the surrounding metropolitan area. Opened as Detroit City Airport in 1927, it was the region's primary airport for more than two decades before larger commercial traffic shifted to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The airport was renamed in 2003 in honor of former Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young.
Today the airport focuses on corporate jets, private aircraft, charter operations and pilot training, with no scheduled commercial passenger service. Its site includes two asphalt runways, a former commercial terminal now used for private, corporate and cargo activity, and an executive terminal with hangars and fixed-base operator services.
Located about six miles northeast of downtown Detroit, the airport provides a convenient entry point for business aviation travelers heading to the city centre, the east side and nearby commercial districts.
