About Chippewa County International Airport
Chippewa County International Airport is a public-use airport serving Sault Ste. Marie and the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The airport operates on the site of the former Kincheloe Air Force Base, which closed in 1977, and is managed by the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation. Today it is one of only 12 commercial service airports in the state.
Located about 15 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie, CIU connects the region to major hubs through Delta Connection flights to Detroit and Minneapolis. Its commercial passenger terminal opened in September 2002, and a new general aviation terminal with U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities was added in 2022.
The airport is reached mainly by road, with rental cars, taxis, shuttles and private transfers available for the short journey into Sault Ste. Marie and nearby communities such as the Soo Locks area.
