About Chernofski Harbor Seaplane Base

Chernofski Harbor Seaplane Base is a remote seaplane landing area on the southwestern side of Unalaska Island, in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. It serves light aircraft and general aviation rather than scheduled airline flights, and is used mainly by charter, private, and utility flights reaching this sparsely populated part of the Aleutians.

The landing area lies in Mail Boat Cove at Chernofski Harbor, roughly 50 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor and Unalaska. The water landing area is about 5,000 by 2,000 feet, with no lighting, terminal building, or fuel services. Chernofski village was inhabited for thousands of years but was largely abandoned in the early 20th century; the U.S. Navy operated a port in the harbor from 1942 to 1945 during World War II.

There is no road connection to Chernofski Harbor, so access is by seaplane, boat, or other waterborne transport. Travelers continuing to Unalaska, Dutch Harbor, or other Aleutian communities typically arrange a boat or connecting flight in advance.

Because facilities are minimal, the seaplane base is best suited to self-sufficient travelers and pre-arranged charters. Those visiting the area should confirm landing conditions, weather, and onward transport with their operator before departure.
