About Cheddi Jagan International Airport
Cheddi Jagan International Airport is Guyana's primary international airport, located about 41 km south of Georgetown in the town of Timehri on the East Bank Demerara. Originally built in 1941 as Atkinson Aerodrome during World War II, it later became a commercial airport and took its current name in 1997 to honour former President Cheddi Jagan.
The airport has been expanded and modernized in stages, with a redeveloped passenger terminal opened in 2018 and further upgrades including boarding bridges, e-gates and a new terminal currently under construction. Arrivals are handled on the ground floor and departures on the upper level of the current terminal.
CJIA is connected to Georgetown by road along the East Bank Demerara highway, with official airport taxis, minibuses, pre-arranged hotel transfers, private transfers and rental cars available for the journey. Travel time to the city centre typically ranges from about 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic.
