About Chandalar Lake Airport
Chandalar Lake Airport is a state-owned, public-use airfield serving the remote Chandalar Lake area of Alaska's Brooks Range. Activated in 1958 and operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, it functions primarily as a general-aviation and bush-flying gateway rather than a scheduled commercial airport.
Located roughly 190 miles north of Fairbanks, the airport sits beside Chandalar Lake near the southern flank of the Brooks Range. A single gravel runway of about 3,000 feet supports small aircraft used for backcountry travel, mineral exploration, and access to lodges and remote camps in the surrounding region.
The airfield has no control tower, no published instrument approaches, and no regular commercial service, so flying is typically done under visual flight rules. During winter the runway is not maintained and use is generally limited to ski-equipped aircraft.
Road access to the airport is limited; most travelers arrive and depart by light aircraft, while ground access to the broader area is typically made via the Dalton Highway and seasonal trails from Coldfoot, the nearest settlement about 42 nautical miles to the west.
