Challis Airport (CHL)

Challis Airport is a city-owned, public-use airport located about one mile northeast of central Challis in Custer County, Idaho. It primarily serves general aviation and provides air access to the Salmon River region of central Idaho. The airport has been in operation since 1940 and features a single asphalt runway, 17/35, measuring 4,601 feet by 60 feet. There is no control tower, and the field is attended during weekday business hours. Challis sits along US Highway 93 and serves as a gateway to outdoor recreation, including the Salmon-Challis National Forest, the Salmon River, the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness and Mount Borah, Idaho's highest peak. Middle Fork Aviation, the on-site fixed-base operator, provides fuel, parking, maintenance, flight training and charter services. Its small size and proximity to town make the airport a practical entry point for pilots and private travelers visiting the region.
