About Carlisle Lake District Airport
Carlisle Lake District Airport is a small regional airport serving Carlisle and northern Cumbria. The site began life as RAF Crosby-on-Eden, which opened in 1941 as a training base for Hawker Hurricane pilots during the Second World War.
After the war the airfield was purchased by Carlisle City Council and licensed for civilian flying in 1961, with domestic flights operating until 1994. Scheduled commercial services returned in July 2019 after terminal and runway improvements by the then owner Stobart Group, when Loganair introduced routes to London Southend, Belfast City and Dublin. These services were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the airport now concentrates on general aviation and military operations.
Located about 6 miles (9 km) northeast of Carlisle city centre near the village of Irthington, the airport is reached by road and lies close to the A689, with the M6 and A69 providing wider connections. A car or taxi journey to central Carlisle typically takes around 15 minutes.
Set between the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish border, the airport serves as a practical gateway for private aviation and regional travel in northwest England.
