About Cape Sarichef Airport
Cape Sarichef Airport is a remote gravel airstrip on the western end of Unimak Island in Alaska's Aleutian Islands. It serves as an access point for the surrounding Izembek National Wildlife Refuge and nearby remote areas rather than as a conventional passenger gateway.
The airfield was activated in April 1958 in connection with the former Cape Sarichef Air Force Station. Today it is owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and managed as part of the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, with private-use status and prior permission required before landing.
The airport has two gravel runways, 16/34 and 6/24, no control tower, and no published instrument procedures. The runways are not regularly maintained, and pilots are advised to inspect them visually before use.
There are no road connections to the airstrip, so access is by air only. Nearby communities in the wider region include Akutan, Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, Cold Bay, and King Cove, making the airport primarily useful for specialized charter, refuge operations, and backcountry access.
