About Cape Newenham LRRS Airport

Cape Newenham LRRS Airport is a remote military airstrip on the Bering Sea coast of southwest Alaska, roughly 460 miles southwest of Anchorage. It provides air access to the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, part of a network of installations that monitor air activity in and around Alaskan airspace. The facility is not open to public passenger travel and serves official U.S. Air Force operations and approved charter flights.

The airstrip was built in the early 1950s to support construction and operation of the Cape Newenham Air Force Station. After the manned radar station closed in 1983, the airstrip remained in use as the access point for the unattended long-range radar site. It has a single gravel runway, 15/33, measuring about 3,945 by 150 feet and located on the slope of a 2,305-foot mountain.

The airport sits about one nautical mile southeast of Cape Newenham and is reachable only by air or sea, with no road link to major towns. The nearest communities include Platinum, about 23 nautical miles north, and Goodnews Bay, about 27 air miles north.

Because this is a restricted military facility, there are no public terminals, commercial check-in, or passenger amenities. Travel to the site is arranged through military channels or approved charter operators, and advance permission is required for all landings.
