About Cape May County Airport

Cape May County Airport is the southernmost public-use airport in New Jersey and serves as a general aviation gateway for Cape May County, Wildwood, and the surrounding southern Jersey Shore. It primarily supports private, corporate, and recreational flying rather than scheduled airline service.

The airport began operations in 1941 as Naval Air Station Rio Grande, where pilots trained during World War II, and later transitioned to public and general aviation use. Today the field has two asphalt runways and operates without a control tower, with pilot and passenger services provided by the fixed-base operator, Flight Level Aviation.

Located in Rio Grande and about four miles northwest of Wildwood, the airport is a short drive from Cape May and close to Route 47, the Garden State Parkway, and the Cape May–Lewes Ferry terminal. Travelers can continue by private car, taxi, arranged transfers, or rental cars available from agencies in nearby Rio Grande.

The airport also holds the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum in Hangar #1 and the Flight Deck Diner in the original World War II tower building, adding local history and convenience for visitors and pilots passing through.
