About Cannon Air Force Base

Cannon Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation on the high plains of eastern New Mexico, about 5 miles (8 km) west of Clovis. It carries the IATA code CVS and ICAO code KCVS and is home to the 27th Special Operations Wing, part of Air Force Special Operations Command.

The site began in the late 1920s as Portair Field, a civilian airfield that later became Clovis Municipal Airport and served as Clovis Army Air Field during World War II. After reactivation in the early 1950s, it was officially named Cannon Air Force Base on June 8, 1957, in honor of General John K. Cannon.

The airfield operates two runways, 4/22 and 13/31, supported by a control tower and approach, departure, and ground services. Because it is primarily a military facility, public commercial passenger flights are handled by nearby Clovis Regional Airport (CVN), roughly 12 nautical miles to the east.

The base sits just west of Clovis with road access via US Highways 60 and 84, putting the city center about 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Its location near the New Mexico–Texas line makes it a practical reference point for travel across the eastern New Mexico plains and communities such as Portales.
