About Cairns Army Airfield
Cairns Army Airfield is the main airfield serving Fort Novosel, formerly Fort Rucker, in Dale County, Alabama. Opened in October 1943, it supports the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and is among the busiest Army airfields in the United States, with heavy helicopter training traffic throughout the year.
The airfield is named for Major General Bogardus Snowden "Bugs" Cairns, an early champion of armed helicopter aviation, and was renamed in his honor in 1959. Located about six miles south of Ozark, it sits within Fort Novosel, the Army's primary helicopter flight training installation in southeast Alabama.
Cairns Army Airfield operates two asphalt runways and multiple helipads and is used primarily for military aviation rather than scheduled commercial passenger flights. Dothan Regional Airport, roughly 24 miles to the east, provides the main commercial air service for the Wiregrass region.
Access to Cairns Army Airfield is restricted, and ground transportation is generally by private vehicle along the US-84 and AL-85 corridor. From the airfield, Ozark, Dothan, Enterprise and nearby communities can be reached by car, pre-arranged transfer or chauffeured ground service.
