About Buckley Space Force Base
Buckley Space Force Base is a United States Space Force installation and military airfield located in Aurora, Colorado, east of downtown Denver. It supports space-based missile warning, satellite operations, and a range of Air National Guard and Army aviation missions rather than scheduled commercial passenger service.
The site began in 1938 as a City of Denver bombing range and auxiliary field for Lowry Field. It was activated as Buckley Field in 1942 to train military aviators, became the nation's first stand-alone Air National Guard base in 1960, was redesignated Buckley Air Force Base in 2000, and received its current name in 2021.
The installation sits roughly 32 km (20 miles) east of downtown Denver, near major road links including E-470 and Interstate 225. Access is restricted to military personnel and authorized visitors, and travel to Denver and nearby communities is typically by private vehicle, pre-authorized car service, or public RTD bus and light rail routes near the base perimeter.
With its long runway, Space Force and Air National Guard units, and supporting facilities, the base remains an important part of Colorado's defense community and the wider Denver metropolitan area.
