About Bradshaw Army Airfield

Bradshaw Army Airfield is a military airfield within the Pōhakuloa Training Area on Hawaii Island, the largest U.S. Department of Defense training installation in Hawaii. Located on the high saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, it primarily supports U.S. Army and joint military training rather than commercial passenger travel.

Built in the mid-1950s and dedicated in August 1957, the airfield operates a single asphalt runway of about 3,700 feet at roughly 6,190 feet of elevation. The runway serves small fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, and fog, gusty winds and the surrounding volcanic terrain can affect flight operations.

The airfield lies along Saddle Road (Hawaii Route 200), roughly 40 miles from both Hilo and Kailua-Kona. Access to the installation is restricted to authorized personnel, and the nearest commercial airports are Hilo International (ITO) and Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA).

Because it is a remote military facility, Bradshaw Army Airfield has no public passenger terminal or commercial airline services. Most civilian travelers reach the surrounding region by flying into Hilo or Kona and continuing by road.
