About Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is Alabama's largest and busiest airport and the main commercial gateway for Birmingham and central Alabama. Opened in 1931 as Birmingham Municipal Airport and renamed in 2008 in honor of civil rights leader Fred Shuttlesworth, the airport has grown into the region's primary connection point for domestic air travel.

Located about five miles (8 km) northeast of downtown Birmingham, BHM serves the city and surrounding communities with nonstop flights to major U.S. destinations. The single modern passenger terminal, completed in 2014, has three concourses and 19 gates serving Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.

The airport is convenient to reach by car via Interstate 20 and Interstate 59, and travelers can continue into Birmingham by taxi, rideshare, rental car, public bus or hotel shuttle. There is no rail link at the terminal itself, though the Amtrak station is located a short drive away in the city.

Inside the terminal, passengers find free Wi-Fi, dining and shopping options, ATMs, charging points, nursing rooms, pet relief areas and accessibility services, making BHM a practical and easy-to-navigate gateway for visitors to the Birmingham region.
