Billy Mitchell Airport (HNC)

Billy Mitchell Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Hatteras Island in Dare County, North Carolina. Located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, it is named after Brigadier General William 'Billy' Mitchell, who staged a famous aerial bombing demonstration off the Hatteras coast in 1923. The airport is operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Aviation through an agreement with the National Park Service.

The airport has a single 3,002-foot asphalt runway and a small modern terminal with a lounge, Wi-Fi, a courtesy telephone and restrooms. It handles private and general aviation traffic rather than scheduled commercial flights, and operations are limited to daylight hours between 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. Aircraft parking is available at tie-down locations near the terminal and mid-field.

Billy Mitchell Airport sits about 4 nautical miles east of Hatteras village, close to the community of Frisco. Travelers can continue to Hatteras, Buxton, Avon and other Outer Banks destinations by local taxi, community shuttle, bicycle or pre-arranged private transfer. The village of Hatteras is roughly a 10-minute drive from the airfield.

There is no fuel or running water at the airport, so pilots often plan refueling at nearby facilities such as Dare County Regional Airport to the north or Michael J. Smith Airport to the south. For visitors arriving by private aircraft, the airfield offers a convenient gateway to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, national seashore beaches and the wider Outer Banks.
