About Bettles Airport
Bettles Airport is a small, state-owned public-use airport serving Bettles, Alaska, in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area. The airport opened in January 1949 and remains a key rural transport link for the Koyukuk River area and the central Brooks Range.
Located about 35 miles north of the Arctic Circle and roughly 180 air miles northwest of Fairbanks, the airport is one of the closest gateways to Gates of the Arctic National Park. It mainly handles scheduled regional flights, charter and bush operations, and serves as a base for air-taxi flights into the surrounding wilderness.
The airport has a single gravel runway, a separate water runway for floatplanes, and one compact passenger terminal. Regional airlines such as Wright Air Service and Warbelow's connect Bettles with Fairbanks, with flights typically taking about an hour.
Because Bettles is a roadless community, the airport is the primary way in and out of town. Arriving travellers continue by lodge shuttle, pre-arranged transfer, small aircraft or local ground transport, making advance planning useful.
