About Bethel Seaplane Base
Bethel Seaplane Base is a public-use seaplane base located on the Kuskokwim River in Bethel, in the Bethel Census Area of western Alaska. It serves as a water landing facility for floatplanes operating in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, a region where many communities are reached primarily by air and river.
The base was activated in July 1967 and remains open to the public. It has a single water landing area designated NE/SW, measuring 3,000 by 500 feet (914 by 152 metres), with the operating area located in the river, which is also used by boats and swimmers.
The facility is unattended and has no centralized passenger terminal, so travelers typically coordinate directly with seaplane operators. Aviation fuel and minor airframe and powerplant services are available at the state-owned Bethel Airport, approximately 3 nautical miles (5 km) west of the seaplane base.
Bethel is the largest community in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and serves as a regional transportation and administrative hub for more than 50 surrounding villages. Although Bethel is not connected to Alaska's highway system, the seaplane base, Bethel Airport, and the Kuskokwim River connect the city to destinations throughout western Alaska.
