About Berbera International Airport
Berbera International Airport is the main airport serving Berbera, a coastal city in the Sahil region of Somaliland. The airport functions as an important gateway for international and regional travel, particularly for connections between Somaliland, the Horn of Africa and the Gulf region.
The runway was built by the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s and later served NASA as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle programme. A new passenger terminal was inaugurated in 2015, and Berbera International Airport Company (BIAC) took over management in 2020 before the airport reopened to international passengers in November 2021.
Located a short distance from central Berbera, the airport is reached mainly by taxi and pre-arranged private transfers, with local travel times kept short. The airport's runway is among the longest on the African continent and supports a wide range of aircraft operations.
