About Woqooyi Galbeed
Hargeisa is the capital of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland and the administrative centre of the Woqooyi Galbeed (Maroodi Jeex) region in northwestern Somalia. Rebuilt after the destruction of the late 1980s, it is now the region's main political, commercial and transport hub, with a fast-growing urban landscape and strong trade connections to Ethiopia and the port of Berbera.
The city's origins reach back to a 19th-century Islamic settlement founded by Sheikh Madar around a watering and trading stop for pastoralist caravans. It later served as the capital of British Somaliland, and its layered history is reflected in landmarks such as the War Memorial with its MiG fighter jet, the Independence Monument and the twin Naasa Hablood hills that rise on the city's edge.
Central Hargeisa revolves around Waaheen Market, one of the Horn of Africa's busiest trading markets, alongside the livestock market and the Hargeisa Cultural Centre. Districts such as 26 June, Ahmed Dhagah, Mohamed Moge, Ga'an Libah and Ibrahim Kodbur each contribute a different mix of commerce, housing and local life.
Hargeisa is also an important business destination, driven by livestock exports, remittances, trade, telecommunications and a growing number of banks, hotels and universities. The nearby Berbera Corridor has increased its role in regional logistics and investment.
For travellers, Hargeisa offers a compact but distinctive introduction to Somaliland, from its lively markets and cafés to day trips to the prehistoric rock art of Laas Geel and the coastal town of Berbera.
