About Egal International Airport
Egal International Airport is the main international airport serving Hargeisa and the wider Somaliland region. Opened in 1954 as a British RAF airfield, it was later named after Muhammad Haji Ibrahim Egal, Somaliland's second president, and remains the principal entry and exit point for air travel in the area.
Located about 5 km southeast of central Hargeisa, the airport provides domestic and international connections, including flights to Addis Ababa, Dubai, Djibouti and Mogadishu. A major renovation completed in 2012–2013 modernised the airfield, which now has a 3,700-metre asphalt runway and a single terminal building serving both domestic and international passengers.
The airport operates mainly during daytime hours and is reached from the city by taxi, private transfer, chauffeur service or rental car, with road access making it relatively easy to continue into Hargeisa and surrounding areas.
