About Barrow/Walney Island Airport

Barrow/Walney Island Airport is a private and general aviation airfield serving Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness peninsula in Cumbria. Situated on Walney Island, it is used mainly for corporate and communication flights, particularly those supporting the nearby BAE Systems submarine yard, rather than scheduled airline services.

The site began life during the First World War as an airship station and was developed as RAF Walney from 1941, when runways were laid out for No. 10 Air Gunnery School. Military flying ended in 1946, and the airfield later passed to Vickers in 1959. Commercial services operated for a period in the late 20th century but ceased by 1992, after which the airport returned to private use.

Today the airport is owned and operated by BAE Systems and was expanded in 2019 with a new terminal building and air traffic control tower. It offers two asphalt runways and supports general aviation, private charter and corporate shuttle operations on a strictly prior permission required basis.

Located about 3 km northwest of central Barrow-in-Furness, the airport is reached by road across Jubilee Bridge. There is no direct public transport link to the terminal, so most travellers use taxis, private transfers or pre-arranged collection, with onward journeys possible toward the town centre, the shipyard, and the wider Lake District and Cumbrian coast.
