Barking Sands Airport is a military airfield located within the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the west coast of Kauai, Hawaii. The facility supports missile range testing, training and research operations rather than scheduled commercial passenger flights.
The airfield has a long history on Kauai. A landing field was established at Barking Sands in 1928, and the site later served as Mana Airport, the island's primary commercial airport during and after World War II until Lihue Airport opened in 1949. The installation was later transferred to the U.S. Navy and became the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands.
Located about five nautical miles northwest of Kekaha and roughly 34 miles west of Lihue, the airport operates a single asphalt runway and is connected to Kauai's road network along the western coast. Access to the airfield is restricted to military personnel, authorized visitors and approved flights.
Most travelers heading to Kauai arrive at Lihue Airport, the island's main commercial gateway, and continue by road to Kekaha, Waimea and other west-side destinations.
