Bario Airport (BBN)

Bario Airport is a small STOLport serving Bario, a highland community in the Kelabit Highlands of northeastern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Because Bario has no reliable road connection for much of the year, the airport is a vital air link for residents, supplies and visitors, with MASwings Twin Otter flights connecting the town to Miri.

The airport has a single compact wooden terminal building and one runway, reflecting its role as a short takeoff and landing facility for small aircraft. It has been in operation since 1996 and was refurbished by Malaysia Airports in 2018 to improve conditions for the small number of daily flights serving the highlands.

Bario Airport lies close to the small town of Bario, roughly a short walk or a quick ride from the centre. There are no taxis waiting at the terminal, so most visitors arrange a pickup through their homestay or lodge before arriving, while some simply walk into town.

Despite its limited facilities, the airport is the main gateway for travellers exploring Kelabit longhouse culture, highland trekking routes and local produce such as Bario rice and pineapple. Visitors should pack light, bring cash, and expect weather-dependent schedules in this remote highland setting.
