Ba'kelalan Airport (BKM)

Ba'kelalan Airport is a small Short Take-Off and Landing airport serving the remote Ba'kelalan highlands in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is the main air connection for the local community and for visitors travelling to and from Miri and Lawas. The airport originated as a basic airstrip during the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation in the 1960s and later became a civil STOLport. Improvements in the early 2010s included runway resurfacing and a small terminal to support regular turboprop services. Located about 3 km from the Ba'kelalan settlement centre, the airport has a single compact terminal handling domestic flights. Check-in, security and arrivals are kept simple, with MASwings Twin Otter aircraft providing the main scheduled link. There is no regular public transport at the airport, so travellers usually arrange four-wheel-drive transfers in advance with their accommodation or tour operator. Despite its limited facilities, the airport serves as a practical gateway to the highland villages and trekking areas of this part of Sarawak.
