The airport was redeveloped with funding from the United Arab Emirates government and the ruler of Dubai. The first extended runway section opened in November 2002, and the modern Sheikh Rashid Terminal, named after Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, was inaugurated in January 2007.
Located about 3.7 km from Bahawalpur city centre, the airport is a short drive from the city and is reached mainly by taxi, private transfer or private car. Parking is available near the terminal building.
