About Assab International Airport
Assab International Airport is a dual-use airport serving the port city of Assab on Eritrea's Red Sea coast, in the Southern Red Sea region. Located about 13 km northwest of the town centre, it acts as a regional gateway for the coast and nearby areas close to the Bab al-Mandab strait.
The airfield dates from the Italian colonial era of the late 1930s, when it was created as a secondary military support airport. It was damaged during the Second World War and later rebuilt, and today operates mainly for private, charter and military flights rather than regular scheduled commercial services.
The facility has a single basic terminal and one asphalt runway, with limited passenger amenities. Since 2015 it has also been used for military logistics after a lease agreement with the United Arab Emirates, and it remains an important point of access to the southern Red Sea coast.
