About Northern Red Sea
Massawa is Eritrea's principal Red Sea port and the capital of the Northern Red Sea Region, built across two islands linked to the mainland by causeways. Known as the 'Pearl of the Red Sea', it combines a working harbour, Ottoman-era streets, Italian colonial landmarks and access to the coral reefs of the Dahlak Archipelago.
The old town, locally called Batsi, sits on Massawa Island and preserves some of the finest Ottoman and Egyptian-era architecture on the Red Sea coast. Coral-block houses with wooden balconies line its lanes, alongside the Sheikh Hanafi Mosque, one of Eritrea's oldest mosques, and the ruins of the 1870s Imperial Palace on Taulud Island. Repeated earthquakes and the 1990 Operation Fenkil battle damaged much of the city, yet its historic core remains a distinctive record of centuries of Aksumite, Ottoman, Egyptian and Italian influence.
Beyond the old town, visitors can explore the Dahlak Archipelago, a chain of more than 200 islands offering some of the Red Sea's best diving and snorkelling, as well as Gurgusum Beach and nearby Green Island. About 50 kilometres south, the ancient Aksumite port ruins of Adulis add a further layer to the region's long trading history.
As a deep-water port and free-trade-zone gateway, Massawa remains central to Eritrea's shipping and import-export activity, with ferry links to the Dahlak Islands and a railway connection toward Asmara. Its seafood-led food culture, colonial-era bank and cathedral buildings, and calm, unhurried coastal atmosphere give it a different rhythm from the highland capital.
For leisure travellers, Massawa offers historic streets, beaches, diving and island excursions; for business visitors, it is the entry point to Eritrea's maritime trade and logistics. The hot desert climate means the coolest months, roughly October to March, are the most comfortable time to visit.
