About Gash-Barka

Barentu is the capital of Eritrea's Gash-Barka region and the main trading and administrative centre of the country's western agricultural belt. Set on fertile plains at roughly 1,000 metres elevation, the town lies on routes linking Asmara with Agordat, Tesseney and the border area near Sudan. Its character is shaped by the Kunama and Nara communities, whose languages, music and traditions remain central to local identity.

The town grew rapidly after Eritrean independence in 1991, expanding from a population of around 10,000 to more than 30,000 as investment in roads, services and public buildings transformed the settlement. During the 1998–2000 border war, Barentu was briefly captured and damaged before being rebuilt. Today older Kunama homesteads and newer administrative buildings stand side by side, giving the town a layered sense of history.

As the hub of Gash-Barka, often called Eritrea's breadbasket, Barentu channels crops, livestock and trade from the surrounding plains. The central market is a lively gathering point for grain, produce and goods from nearby villages, while regional agro-industry and infrastructure projects anchor the local economy. Visitors can also encounter Kunama and Nara crafts, dance and rituals that are distinctive within Eritrea.

Nearby, traditional villages, seasonal riverbeds and open farmland offer a quieter view of rural western Eritrea. In town, Orthodox churches and mosques reflect the mix of Christian and Muslim communities, alongside indigenous Kunama and Nara religious practices.

For travellers, Barentu is a practical base for exploring a less-visited side of Eritrea, with cultural heritage, agricultural landscapes and connections to regional towns. Its distance from Asmara makes advance planning and a reliable vehicle useful, while business visitors focused on agriculture and development find it a key western hub.
