About Asmara International Airport
Asmara International Airport is the main international airport serving Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, and is the country's largest and busiest aviation gateway. It operates as the hub for Eritrean Airlines and connects the capital with destinations in Africa, the Middle East and beyond.
The airport's history dates back to 1922, when it was established as a military airfield during the Italian colonial period and originally known as Aeroporto di Gura. It later developed into a civil airport and remains in operation today, serving both civil aviation and military activity.
Located about 6 km south of central Asmara, the airport has a single passenger terminal and two runways. Its compact layout supports arrivals, departures, check-in, security screening, baggage handling and ground transportation within one terminal complex.
Road access connects the airport to the city centre by taxi, private transfer or rental car, with short travel times to central Asmara. Passenger facilities include duty-free and gift shops, restaurants and cafés, Wi-Fi, parking, ATMs and banking services, making it a practical gateway for visitors arriving in Eritrea.
