Asau Airport (AAU)

Asau Airport is a small domestic airfield serving the village of Asau and the northwestern coast of Savai'i, Samoa's second-largest island. The original airport opened in 1969, but it was washed away by Cyclone Ofa in 1990 and replaced by the current facility in 1999. After a six-year closure, the airport reopened in April 2021 when Samoa Airways resumed flights between Upolu and Savai'i.

Located about 2 km from Asau village, the airfield has a single roughly surfaced runway and a compact apron suited to smaller aircraft such as Twin Otter and Britten-Norman Islander planes. A small shed serves as the passenger terminal, and the airport handles domestic and charter flights only.

Asau Airport helps connect the far western end of Savai'i with the rest of Samoa. The flight from Apia takes under 20 minutes, offering an alternative to the inter-island ferry and saving several hours of travel to the island's western villages.

Ground connections are limited but practical: taxis and pre-arranged transfers serve the airport, and onward travel around Savai'i is possible by car, bus or arranged transport. Passengers heading to Upolu typically continue via the ferry terminal at Salelologa on Savai'i's east coast.
