Åre Östersund Airport is the main airport serving Östersund and the Jämtland region, and the closest commercial runway to Åre, Sweden's largest alpine resort. The airport began as a military airbase in 1926 and opened to civil traffic in 1958; it was renamed in 2006 to highlight its role as a gateway to the Åre ski area.
It operates a single compact terminal handling both domestic and international flights, with a 2,500-metre runway. Regular services connect to Stockholm, while winter charters bring skiers from the United Kingdom and northern Europe between December and April.
Located on the island of Frösön in Lake Storsjön, about 11 kilometres west of central Östersund, the airport is roughly a 10-minute drive from the city centre. Airport coaches, taxis and rental cars serve the terminal, and Åre is about an hour away by road via the E14.
